What is the Endocrine System?

  • Contains many glands
    • These glands are shown in the picture above
    • Glands produce hormones
  • Hormones allow the body to maintain homeostasis

Pineal and Pituitary Glands

  • Located in the brain
  • Glands cause and slow down sex and growth hormones
  • Controls sleep + characteristics

Hypothalamus

  • Located in the brain
  • Controls many other glands
  • Regulates metabolism and body temperature
  • Very important for homeostasis

Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands

  • Located in the center of the neck
  • Increases metabolism rate in the body
  • Maintains Calcium levels

Thymus

  • Located in lower neck/ chest
  • Mostly replaced by fat after puberty
  • Important in development of immune system

Adrenal Gland

  • Located above right and left kidney
  • Consists of cortex and medulla
  • Uses “stress hormone”
  • Taps into body’s energy during stressful events

Pancreas

  • Located in abdomen
  • Consists of exocrine and endocrine pancreas
  • Endocrine pancreas controls glucose in body

Ovaries and Testes

  • Ovaries: found in females
    • Produce egg cells
  • Testes: found on males
    • Produce sperm cells
